| Today is Ali's birthday--16 years--WOW. I've had a very busy day. First we put the second coat on the living room. That's a lot of painting (but, it looks great ;). Then Claire and I had to put together the photo scavenger hunt. I think the partiers had a lot of fun doing that. Then, of course, the party. It's really loud at our house right now. Ha. Anyway, I need a book to finish out the summer. Anyone have any ideas? I just finished the 10th Janet Evanovich novel about Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter. Talk about funny--especially whenever she takes anyone to have dinner at her parent's house. Got to go cut the birthday brownies. Mrs. Fred | | |
| Finished Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince last week, and I am still bummed. Still, it was a great book, and I really enjoyed it. JK Rowling better get to writing soon--we can't just leave Harry now :)
We're painting at our house--did the dining room last weekend in a nice green, and will do the downstairs hall and one wall of the living room a goldenrod color this weekend. Maybe we will even start the upstairs hall and library (brick color) too. Summer is just flying away, so we have to get our projects done soon.

| Finally, it's Harry Potter day :) We're going to the Orpheum for the Watermark event, but then I have to wait until one of the girls finshes a book so I can read it. I guess I need something else to read for a day or two. Any suggestions out there? By the way, the new Beetle has a name--Spud. Why? Just 'cuz. | | |
| Well, it's the Fourth of July, and the food is cooking. Besides a barbeque with the neighbors, we don't really have any plans. I do have big news, though--drum roll, please--on Thursday, I got a mellow yellow convertible VW beetle, and it is SO COOL. We've been to Topeka in it, and have driven all around town with the top down. Watch for me and my yellow bug.

| I just finished reading Eragon, Book 1, and I am really excited about it. The author was only 15 when he wrote it, but it shows his imagination as well as familarity with classic fantasy, including The Lord of the Rings and the Arthur legends. The book particularly reminded me of an old favorite of mine, Lloyd Alexander's series with Taran Pig Keeper, though it is longer. Claire says, however, that it doesn't have a character like Gurgi (and she's right). Brom seems a cross between Dallben, Coll, Gandalf and Merlin--though mostly Dallben, because Brom never directly wants to answer Eragon's questions. It does draw heavily on Celtic mythology, and I assume, language. All of that sounds very "teachery," but the best thing about the book is how much I enjoyed reading it, and how I look forward to the second in the series coming out in August. Let me know what you think.
